The Tyrolean baritone Wolfgang Stefan Schwaiger has been a member of the Cologne Opera ensemble since 2016 and has performed roles there, including Guglielmo (Cosi fan tutte), Papageno (The Magic Flute), Dandini (La Cenerentola), Ned Keene (Peter Grimes) and Figaro in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. Guest engagements have taken him to the Opera Vlaanderen as Falke (The Bat) and to the Teatro Real in Madrid as Giove (La Calisto). He has also performed at the Hanover State Opera, the Bregenz Festival and the Darmstadt State Theater.
In addition to his opera work, Wolfgang Stefan Schwaiger is a sought-after concert and song singer. He regularly gives song recitals, including Die schöne Müllerin with Barbara Moser on the piano, and performs oratorios and orchestral songs.
He began his training at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Karlheinz Hanser. In 2019 he also completed his master’s degree in song and oratorio with Florian Boesch with distinction. He gained his first stage experience at the Schönbrunn Palace Theater and at the Graz Opera. He was awarded numerous prizes at an early age, including the Brahms Competition in Pörtschach, the Tyrolean Singers’ Prize and 2nd prize at the International Ferruccio Tagliavini Competition. In 2018 he was awarded the Offenbach Prize by the Cologne Opera.
